Well hello there! Remember me? The girl who used to quilt a lot but then started a renovation and all of a sudden there was no time for anything else. Well I’m back and I couldn’t be more excited to share my sewing studio with you all.
It’s so nice to have a room that’s been made for the sole purpose of sewing and even nicer to have everything in one place. I feel very lucky that we’ve been able to incorporate a sewing studio into our renovation plans. The room was my Mum’s bedroom when she was growing up and it’s right at the end of a short corridor. I’m looking for suggestions for the frames by the way! If you have any please shout.
For a while there I thought about making one long work bench but then, I realised I couldn’t give up the drawers in these Ikea Alex desks. Putting two desks together solved the problem and, bonus, even more drawers to fill up!
I’ve had a couple of questions on Instagram about my cutting table so I thought I’d pop the list of items I used to make it here. I used pretty much the same method of construction that Karen Ackva used on her table. Of course, I only used two Kallax units instead of the three which is why I needed the adjustable legs. It’s a great height for cutting and this new version I made has space for a stool as well.
We installed a built-in cupboard into the new sewing studio during the renovation and I really thought that I’d got the shelving right. Turns out it didn’t work at all and there was just a big mess. See what I mean… Yuk!
Thankfully I found someone who could install new shelves and drawers pronto and the new cupboard is now super tidy and organised!
The drawers are a great size for fat quarters and, for storing my larger pieces of solid fabrics.
And there’s even room at the top of the cupboard for books. Thankfully there is another whole shelf above this one because I’ve got a whole bunch of books that need to be put away!
Most of all I love being able to throw the doors open and see just about every piece of fabric easily. I draw so much inspiration from these piles so it’s nice to be able to see it all without having to move everything about.
There’s still some finishing touches to do like making a design wall and adding a bit more colour to the wall behind my desks. In the meantime its been nice to rediscover some treasures like this little star I found in Lancaster County, PA.
And these WIP’s (work in progress) that I’d forgotten all about. The dragon and unicorn are patterns by Kerry from Kidgiddy’s Land of Magic quilt and the squirrel is from Violet Craft’s Forest Abstractions pattern. All adorable and all about to become cute little throw pillows.
And just because I know that some of you have been wanting a renovation update here’s a few pictures of the new kitchen, pantry and deck. Kinda almost nearly makes the pain of an eight month renovation worth it.
So what do you think? Do you like the new sewing studio? I feel so lucky to have such a nice space to work in. I’m looking forward to putting it to good use for many years to come!
Have a happy week,
Looks fabulous, I am so envious.
Peta, you have a beautiful home!!
Beautiful Home! Maybe a Favorite Quilt Block would be nice in your pretty frames. Thanks for sharing!
It’s drop-dead gorgeous! I knew your fabric drawers would be impeccable given you even fold your undies 🙂 I hope you get the chance to get into that new sewing room and sew up a storm soon! x x x

Beautiful home!!! Your studio is so perfect and inspiring 🙂
Love your sewing space! So bright and organized! I have a question, on the shelf in the closet there are 3 white plastic baskets with lids, where did you find baskets like that with lids? I love the white plastic baskets and I have several, but I’ve never seen lids!
Hi Sandy, Thanks so much for sewing room love! Those little baskets are just so great and yes! the lid makes all the difference. They’re from Kmart here in Australia and they come in a few different sizes and colours. I’ve popped the link below for you 🙂
