I’m so glad 2019 is here. The new year is such a great time to get myself organised, motivated and moving! Particularly now that my husband has returned from his year long deployment and the renovation is pretty much done. I’m looking forward spending a lot more time quilting in 2019!
I’m really hoping to focus on using some of my extensive scrap fabric collection this year. I already have a couple of projects in mind. The first of which I’ll be basing on this one made by Alison Harris of Cluck Cluck Sew. Allison has a great tutorial if you’d like to try one yourself. You can find her tutorial by clicking here.
Over the last couple of years my scraps have gone from a fairly manageable to an explosive mess that needs a lot more sorting and coordinating. I still use my fabric bins to collect scraps while I’m cutting new projects. But, these days, I need to regularly sort the scraps into a more manageable and visual system.
I keep my fabric in colour coordinated stacks. So, it just makes sense to colour coordinate my scraps in the same way. I wish I had endless room for storing scraps but I just don’t. With that in mind I purchased a few of these tubs from Kmart Australia. I use them for my good sized scraps. That is, pieces of fabric that are larger than 10″ x 10″ square but smaller than a fat quarter. Being stackable and lightweight makes the tubs easy to move in and out of my fabric cupboard.
And, because the tubs aren’t too big it’s easy to pop them up on my cutting table so I can select the pieces I need for my next scrap friendly project!
I don’t usually keep teeny scraps of fabric. My minimum size is about 3″ square and/or long strips. These smaller pieces get lost in the tubs with the larger pieces so I figured another system was needed. Since I don’t have as many small pieces I find its easy to keep them tied up in colour bundles.
Once tied its easy to throw the bundles into my scrap bins. They are then ready to use when I’m cutting out smaller projects like these Lovely Lavender Bags which I need to make some more of! You can view the free tutorial and make your own by clicking here.
So, goal for 2019… Make a dent in those scraps! Next week I will have the first of hopefully many scrap projects for you to try. Hint: Grab out your red and pink valentine themed scraps.
