A New Easter Basket: Free Tutorial

Do you buy themed fabrics? I can’t resist a good bunny, halloween or Christmas print and I definitely have a few stashed away so that when the mood takes hold I can sew up some holiday projects like this sweet little Easter basket without making a special trip to the shop.

I’ve been doing a little bit of easter sewing this week including this Easy Easter Pillow. Click here if you missed it and want to check it out.

Today’s tutorial is all about fabric baskets! Although, they are particularly tricky to photograph so I will get straight to the information you need…

Materials Needed:

  • 1 fat quarter of bunny or easter themed fabric
  • 1 fat quarter of a coordinating print or solid for the accent strip and handles
  • 1 fat quarter for the basket interior.
  • Bag batting/ByAnnie’s Soft & Stable
  • 505 spray adhesive or similar
  • Coordinating thread

Cutting

From the fat quarter you will be using for the main part of the basket (bunny fabric) cut:

  • 4 — 5″ x 6 12″ rectangles for the basket sides
  • 1 — 6 12″ x 6 12″ square for the bottom of the basket

From the fat quarter you will be using for the accent pieces & handles (pink) cut:

  • 4 — 2 14″ x 6 12″ rectangles for the accent pieces on each side
  • 2 — 4″ x 7 12″ rectangles for the handles

From the fat quarter you will be using for the inside of the basket (black & white Bias stripe) cut:

  • 4 — 6 12″ x 6 34″ rectangles for the lining sides
  • 1 — 6 12″ x 6 12″ square for the lining bottom
  • You’ll use some of the leftovers for the applique

From the bag batting cut:

  • 4 — 6″ x 6″ squares
  • 2 — 1″ x 7 12″ rectangles

Basket Construction

Once you have everything cut out and ready to go head over to the Wool Felt Appliqué Basket Tutorial and follow along from step 7 to make your basket.

Easy right. And super cute to boot! These baskets sew up so quickly and they make a great gift idea. Fill them with your favourite baked treats or yummy chocolate easter eggs!

And just in case you were wondering here’s how the inside of the basket looks. (Seriously baskets are super hard to take photos of!)

If you don’t have any Bunny or Easter themed fabric check out the link here. I’ll be here with my eyes closed because seriously! there is some super adorable fabric out there.

And… just because I don’t feel that there are anywhere near enough photos in this post here’s a close up of my easter wreath. I made it myself last year from a boxwood wreath and some Easter egg sprays. The sprays were from Bed Bath n’Table here in Australia but I’m sure you can get something similar everywhere else. Super easy to make and, it looks pretty darn cute on my aqua front door!

Happy sewing!

  1. Thanks so much for the cute tutorial for a basket. I would love to get to work right on it (if I can let my numerous other projects wait…). Happy Easter and God Bless!

  2. You did a great job on the photography!, Basket and other layouts!

Lovely wreath and blog post! Makes me want to pause from current projects to make a basket (never mind that I already have wooden Easter baskets) and paint my front door blue. Happy Easter!
